Locked Documents SharePoint O365
There may be an occasion where a document remains locked after the user has unlocked and saved it.
This is caused by the process of unlocking and locking documents has been interrupted. Common causes are computer freezes or crash while the document is open, or loss of connectivity to an internet connection. When this happens a file that has been created in the temporary internet files on the users machine/pc/tablet/phone has not been properly disposed of. The temporary file will either need to expire off or removed.
Instructions
- If you are using Windows 7, you can go to the location via C:Usersyour usernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet Files. Otherwise, if your operating system is not Windows 7, you need to find the folder using the registry:
- Open Run from your computer, enter regedit. After entering the registry, find HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders, and then find the Cache file. The value of it is the location of the temporary files.
- To make sure the updates of the file are not deleted after removing those files, we recommend you save a copy of the Excel or Word file online.
- Open the file in Read Only mode, and then click Save As to create a copy. Also, this action can help you create a new file which doesn’t have any problems. After deletion if the file still cannot work, while you need to use it urgently, you can work with the new one
